Planning for your Spring Soil Mixture

Spring Soil Mixture

It’s almost that time of year again though it might not feel like it yet.  Spring is around the corner and it’s almost time to transplant your bonsai trees.  By now you’ve already done preventative treatment on your trees for pests so all that’s left is to think about your soil.

This year we’ll be using a little more aggregate in our soil.  We like to water frequently as it gets warmer and we would like to have extremely good drainage.  Akadama and lava rocks are a great option for this.  Both ingredients won’t break down easily over time and provide excellent aeration for the roots.  We’ll still be adding a fair amount of organic material to keep water retention but may decrease it’s proportion in favor of drainage and aeration. Depending your climate, you may want to adjust your proportions accordingly.
